The Mouthguard: A Back to School Essential

While you’re out shopping for pencils, notebooks, and folders, you don’t want to forget another important item for back to school – the mouthguard. The risks of receiving a head injury while playing sports are high. More often than not, these head injuries are accompanied by broken, busted, or knocked-out teeth.

If you have a child signed up for any sports or physical activities, our Harrisburg Pediatric Dentists recommends you equip them with the right mouthguard to help prevent serious damage to your athlete’s teeth, gums, jaw, or tongue.

Types of mouthguards

There are three types of mouthguards available for your student athlete: stock, “boil-and-bite”, or custom fit mouthguard. All three offer different types and levels of protection for your child’s mouth.

The stock mouthguard is your cheapest option, but it is also the most uncomfortable. They don’t always fit well, and can make breathing and talking more of a challenge. Most popular, is the “boil-and-bite” mouthguard. Found at most sporting goods stores, athletes boil them to make the material malleable and then bite down to create a more form fit. These do not offer quite as much protection however, as the third option. Recommended by pediatric dentists in Harrisburg, NC pediatric dentists, the custom fit mouthguard is tailored to your child’s teeth, as well as their sport to offer the ultimate protection.

Proper mouthguard care

Don’t forget to keep the mouthguard clean and dry. After each use, it should be washed with soap and water or brushed with toothpaste. Dry it thoroughly and keep it in a cool, dry place until it’s time to be used again. This will ensure the mouthguard lasts all season!
