The 2019 Back to School Dental Checklist

It’s almost time for the kids to go back to school! Whether you’re sad or relieved (or both), it’s time to start preparing for back to school. In addition to shopping for new clothes, backpacks, and school supplies, it’s also time to start checking off the back to school dental checklist, too.

Taking care of your child’s teeth during the school year

As the start to the new school year quickly approaches, Harrisburg Pediatric Dentistry reminds you to make sure your child’s smile is ready, too.

Get back in a routine

Over the summer, it’s not uncommon to become relaxed or lazy about your child’s brushing and dental care routine. Children tend to skip brushing on some days, or become lackadaisical with their brushing. In preparation for the school year, get your children back in the routine of brushing twice a day, for at least two minutes and flossing.

Buy a new toothbrush

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), toothbrushes should be changed every three to four months. Now that summer is over, it’s time to replace your child’s toothbrush. Consider buying them one with their favorite character on it to make brushing time fun.

Pack healthy snacks

It can be hard to control all of what your child eats at school, but it is helpful to pack them healthy lunches and snacks to choose from. Veggies and fruits are best for your child’s health, including their teeth. Skip on the soda and juices and offer water or milk instead. Eliminating extra sugar and acids help protect their teeth from potential decay.

Schedule dental appointments

Sometimes it can be hard to get your child out of school for dental appointments. Schedule them now, before school begins, so you can get the appointments on your calendar.
