5 Steps of a Dental Hygiene Appointment

Beginning and maintaining a dental hygiene routine is vital to your child’s oral health. When visiting for an appointment there are some basics that are always covered, and then we tailor each visit based on your child’s specific needs. Here’s what to expect when coming in for a dental appointment.

Medical & Dental History Review

Dental health has an impact on your overall health, so we’ll discuss your child’s previous medical history to determine the best plan of action moving forward. During this review, be sure to let us know of any previous and/or current medical conditions or concerns.

Multi-Point Oral Exam

A dental hygienist will give your child a gentle and thorough examination. Here they will examine your child’s teeth and gums to identify any potential problems, and ensure things are progressing normally for their age. Digital and/or panoramic x-rays may be given to further examine tooth and jaw structure.

Thorough Teeth Cleaning

Once the exam is complete, the dental hygienist will have a better understanding of your child’s needs. At that point they’ll proceed the cleaning cleaning. We understand kids may be anxious so we explain each tool we using fun descriptions to put them at ease. (Frozen juice, Batman tooth, etc.)!

Discussion and Q&A Session

Your hygienist and pediatric dentist will provide detailed instructions and explanations for continued care. Our goal is to provide valuable and accurate details so everyone, including your child, understands the information. We want parents and kids to feel comfortable before, during, and after an appointment. If any part of your child’s treatment is unclear to you, please ask!

Back Home After Your Visit

At the conclusion of your child’s appointment, our pediatric dentist will provide follow-up instructions to help you maintain a regular oral hygiene plan for your child. We can provide helpful tips and tricks if you have a difficult time getting your little one to follow through with proper brushing and flossing. You can always call our office to speak with one of our tea if you have any further questions
