As you make your grocery list and determine what your kids will be snacking on this week, make sure to think about how those snacks affect their overall health – including their dental health! Five snacks you should be putting in your grocery cart include:

  4. Eggs
  5. Nuts

Eating apples can help clean teeth and fight bad breath. Apples and cruciferous vegetables have fibrous content that acts as a toothbrush and scrubs away plaque other food debris from teeth. The acidity in apples helps eliminate bacteria that causes bad breath. Eggs are rich in phosphorus, an element that helps teeth grow. Finally, nuts like peanuts and walnuts are high in calcium, vitamin D, iron, fiber, and folic acid which help strengthen enamel. Cashews stimulate saliva to help clean teeth and remove bacteria.

3 drinks to protect your child’s teeth

Now that you know what foods are best for your kid’s teeth, you’ve got to wash them down with the best drinks. According to a consensus statement from a panel of experts from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the American Heart Association (AHA), your children should be drinking:

  1. Plain drinking water
  2. Plain, pasteurized milk
  3. 100% juice

Your child should be consuming enough water each day based on their age, recommended by the expert panel. However, Harrisburg Pediatric Dentistry reminds you that your child should be rinsing with water after each meal to remove bacteria and prevent tooth decay. Once a child is a year old, they can drink two to three cups of plain, whole milk per day. Milk’s calcium helps form and strengthen teeth. From ages one to three, experts recommend giving your child half a cup or less of 100 percent fruit juice per day and diluting it with water.
